More than just books

Denton West End Community Library

“Libraries change lives for the better. They not only provide access to books and other literature but also help people to help themselves and improve their opportunities, bring people together, and provide practical support and guidance. As a locally accountable service, they are well-placed to respond to local needs and issues.”  Libraries Deliver: Ambition for Public Libraries in England 2016 to 2021 (DCMS)

Did you know?

Libraries in England receive 224.6 million physical visits, more than visits to Premier League football games, the cinema, and the top 10 UK tourist attractions combined. And 60% of the population holds a current library card.*  As councils face reduced budgets, many are looking for more radical solutions for a range of services including libraries and that is where the Community Libraries Network can support libraries that would otherwise face closure. There are now around 500 community-managed libraries across England & Wales, working with approximately 20,000 volunteers.

What is a community-managed library?

Community libraries serve and engage the local community by offering a range of services starting with the basics of books, newspapers, and book clubs, fuel poverty advice, community cafes, and creative and cultural events. With the support of their local community and volunteers, community libraries reflect the changing needs of their communities, whether it is organising events from Song Time to the Summer Reading Challenge, hosting Drop-in Surgeries, or arranging meeting room hires.

What’s new?

The Community Libraries Network and the Digital Culture Network have come together to see how our Tech Champions can support libraries in their digital journeys. Libraries will be able to draw on the wide range of Tech Champion specialist support: website design, digital content, CRM systems,  Search Engine Optimisation, social media, data analytics, eCommerce, digital marketing and email marketing, helping to keep libraries at the heart of their communities.
